Looking to escape to an island paradise…without leaving Orange County… then look no further than Catalina Island. For a relaxing weekend Catalina is a quick and easy getaway.
The island is packed full of history; it was where Hollywood’s hottest stars would getaway in the 1920s. Not only was it the perfect destination to relax and let loose, the island had a very strict “what happens on Catalina, stays on Catalina” policy. Fun fact: both Marilyn Monroe and Ronald Reagan once lived on Catalina!
Catalina Island can easily be visited as a day trip or weekend getaway, yet it feels like you stepped into Greece. It’s got such a different vibe from the mainland and is such a perfect little getaway without being too far from home.
If you’re planning a trip to Catalina, you can stay in either Avalon or Two Harbors. Two Harbors is the smaller of the two, with only one restaurant and store. While Avalon is about one square mile, filled with tons of shops, restaurants, hotels & things to do.
Here are a few covid friendly things to do in once you get to the island.
Is your biggest fear heights or a fear of drowning? You’ll be perfectly safe parasailing in Catalina Island — however, there is a sense of thrill and adventure. Have your own James Bond moment.
Are we in the South of France? Kayaking in Catalina was a great way to stay active and cool off with a view. If you’re really up for a challenge, you can sign up for a kayak & camping trip and see the entire island by kayak.
3. Look out points in Avalon
One of the best things to do in Catalina Island is to enjoy the view! You can do a quick 15 minute walk to get to this view point, or do a more aggressive 35 minute hike to the view point.
Directions to the look out point:
Walk past the pier towards Island Spa ,to the right is a staircase.
Take the staircase — you’ll get a beautiful view, but that’s not it!
Continue left through the stairs passing homes. You’ll end up on Hill Street.
Walk through Hill Street until you hit a road. Turn right and allow it to weave left.
Walk up the road towards the Chimes Tower. Again, no the view point!
Continue past it, past another set with trees framing the view. You’ll finally hit flat ground that is clearly a viewpoint.
Grab some photos! Enjoy.
4. Island Resort And Spa
For total relaxation, sign up for a massage or facial at the Island Resort & Spa.
5. Go for a swim
If you want to go to Catalina Island and do absolutely nothing, get your feet wet and enjoy the view, you can do that too.
6. Ariel park adventure
The Aerial Park is one of Catalina’s newest activities. Basically, there are five self guided & self paced courses – all made up of rope ladders, log bridges, balance beams, zip lines and other challenging elements—that are arranged in beginner (2), intermediate (2) and advanced (1) configurations, offering aerial excitement for people of all “skill” levels. If you’re feeling really adventurous, you can also sign up for their Zip Line Tour!
7. Rent a golf cart
The carts are super easy to use and you can ride around Avalon on your own schedule. It’s a great way to check out the town, stop in and check out some shops & take in some amazing views. Since cars are restricted on the island, it’s the preferred method of transportation for residents and visitors!
There are daily ferry routes, but if you’re looking to go all out you can also take a quick 15 minute helicopter ride! After you get back from Catalina Island enjoy dinner at one of the many restaurants and enjoy the fun activities along the boardwalk before ending your getaway!
